Rd1. SL4 vs WestVic
Last year’s run away SL5 premiers WestVic came to Todd Road full of confidence after 4 wins over OMs in 2008, and started 2009 in the same vein. Wave after wave of attacks crashed onto our defence, and only a few near misses and Guy’s evergreen reflexes saved us from being more than 1-0 down. Eventually we rose to the challenge, and close to the half hour mark, Cranny converted a short corner with our first shot on goal. 1-1 at half time, a scoreline that flattered the OMs.
The second half was a different story. We kept possession, stretched our game and made WestVic work for everything. OMs were suddenly dominating possession, and penetrated the attacking D 10 times, but no goal eventuated. In direct contrast to the first half where WestVic dominated but leaked a goal against the run of play, we found ourselves on top of the game but 2-1 down on the scoreboard. After a superb second half, OMs were unlucky not to gain a point from this match. Still, the fight and teamwork of the second half generated plenty of confidence for the rest of the season.
